New Jersey birth certificates will now include a third, non-binary label come Feb. 1, under a new law that expands transgender rights in the Garden State.
Gov. Phil Murphy signed the Babs Siperstein Bill into law last July.
The new legislation gives parents the option of choosing a gender-neutral or non-binary identity on their child’s birth certificate. It also allows adults to change the gender marker on their birth and death certificates, without proof of reassignment surgery.
“Just because your sex assigned at birth is one thing, it does not necessarily mean that it is something that’s going to be consistent with your gender identity throughout your life,” says Ashley Chiappano with the group Garden State Equality.

California’s public health officials are alerting doctors and other medical providers to be on the lookout for measles after first New York state and now nearby Washington state wrestle with a wily virus that health experts say can cause deafness and autism in its survivors.
“Most bacteria and viruses, you … have to breathe in a lot of those viruses to get sick, but with measles, it takes very few,” said Dr. Karen Smith, director of the California Department of Public Health. “That means almost everybody who gets exposed is likely to get sick. It also has a very high … attack rate, so when you are infected, you get sick.”
At least 43 people have caught the disease in Washington state and one more in neighboring Multnomah County, Ore. In New York, almost 210 people have had the illness since October.
Each person who gets measles can transmit it to up 12 to 18 people, said Dr. Dean Blumberg, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Medical Center. An infected person can have measles for up to five days before they show any symptoms, Smith said, and in that time, they are coughing the virus into the air or leaving it on surfaces with their hands.

The second largest international crime industry behind illegal drugs, human trafficking reportedly includes 40 million people and generates $32 billion in profit a year, half of which is in industrialized countries.
According to the U.S. State Department, as many as 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every year, including an estimated 15,000 into the United States.
Most human trafficking worldwide — about 80 percent — involves sexual exploitation and the rest involves labor exploitation. About 80 percent of all trafficking victims are female and half are children.

PORTLAND, Ore.—A federal grand jury in Oregon has returned two indictments charging six people with running sex trafficking organizations operating in the U.S., Canada and Australia. The indictments were unsealed today following a series of arrests by FBI Portland’s Child Exploitation Task Force (CETF) resulting from a multi-district takedown operation on Tuesday, January 15, 2019.
The FBI partnered with local law enforcement agencies in more than a dozen cities across the nation to coordinate sting operations targeting the organizations operated by defendants under indictment in Oregon, along with other Asian sex trafficking networks. As part of the takedown operation, the FBI seized the primary website used by one of the organizations, www.supermatchescort.com, and about 500 other associated domains, including 25 location-specific sub-sites.
In addition to the arrests, the FBI assisted five victims in Oregon. The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office victim services programs worked with local non-profits to ensure the victims have access to social, medical and legal services.
