There is no single gene that “makes” someone an HSP. However, for the past 20 years or so, researchers have believed that a handful of genes play a particularly important role in how sensitive someone is. The most prominent of these is a particular variation on the serotonin transporter gene (SERT). One crucial area of this gene contains two lines of genetic code which can each be either “long” or “short.” HSPs may be more likely to carry the short/short variant.
The short SERT gene has been widely studied but also widely misunderstood. At one time, it was considered to be a depression gene, where people with the short version are more likely to have anxiety and depression. Fascinatingly, ethnic and racial data proved this theory wrong: East Asians are statistically more likely to have the short SERT variant, but as neuroscientist Joan Chiaoshowed, eastern Asia actually has lower rates of depression than North America. Something wasn’t adding up.
Chiao’s finding led to atheory that the short SERT gene actually gives people an advantage in more “collective” minded culture but stresses them out in more “individualistic” cultures, and thus shapes the way cultures evolve. That theory is not widely accepted, either. (Putting aside the questionable connotations of assigning a “collectivist” mindset to Asians writ large, Pluess explained that it’s extremely unlikely that any one gene can play such a big role in shaping culture.)

The people are weary and irritable. I saw that today at a local event – people waiting to get inside. A wee bit lacking in organization. Standing in line in the cold. I saw the fatigue – had a short convo about the cost of living – even a hair cut. “I do my own,” she said – “oh yeah me too”, I answered. Just saw weariness and fatigue – short tempers – behind the smiles we were still giving one another.
The good people are done. We need the new. What a perfect time of year to provide that, right?

i was in my bedroom – wrapping gifts – reflecting on where we are now. i was thinking about some people i really care about – truthers – warriors – speakers OF truth – how much cr@p they’ve been going through – especially the past week or so. ya’ll know my struggles – but obviously i am not the only one. people i care about now dealing w/sudden health issues, job loss, anxiety off the charts, divorce and up-to-“here” debt accumulation this past year just to keep going.
this awakening would not be happening without any of us of course – but most especially those warriors who call out the lies – who share the truth with family against all odds – who put it out on social media – and from my experience have the biggest, most trusting hearts. trust me – they ain’t asking for these attacks. they want a new experience. they want a new world.
for all of us.
so it brought up that ‘ole angst and frustration and sadness – that those who still aren’t seeing for whatever reason – are not experiencing these same attacks. in fact i would say most of these folks would tell the rest of us we’re crazy – simply because they don’t see what we do. and at times quite literally – we only see 5-7% of this known reality and that is system based science telling us this.

anyway – once again i’m left with the knowing and pleading of ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. we’re flying blind – often alone – while others inside are “well insulated” – and the rest of the masses either used against us or not experiencing any of us.
